Simon Mercer is a Program Manager in the External Research
& Programs Group.
I have a background in biology (Ph.D. in mammalian chromosomal
evolution) and have worked in various aspects of bioinformatics over
the years. Most recently I was Director of Bioinformatics and
Strategic IT at the National Research Council of Canada's Institute
for Marine Biosciences, with responsibility for the Canadian
Bioinformatics Resource, a national network dedicated to
bioinformatics research support. I then worked as Director of
Software Engineering at Gene Codes Corporation, authors of the
leading desktop DNA sequence assembly application and a forensic
application used to identify the remains of the victims of the
September 11th World Trade Center attacks.
In October 2005 I became a Program Manager at Microsoft, with a
mandate to push the state of the art in academic bioinformatics
research.
