Mike Sinclair

I am presently a senior researcher in the Hardware Devices group under the direction of Turner Whitted. My main research interests are in user interface devices for the PC, PDAs and wearables; MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) for interface applications; digital photography using linear sensors; and haptic interfaces.

I received my BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to joining Microsoft Research in March of 1998, I was an Institute Fellow at Georgia Tech and director of the Interactive Media Technology Center where I directed multimedia projects for Atlanta's successful bid for the 1996 Olympics, four Dance Technology projects with the Atlanta Ballet, Georgia Power's Economic Development Center and a number of interactive museum systems. I also helped develop a number of surgical simulators, telemedicine systems, digital cameras, haptic displays, 3D scanners and 3D motion capture systems. Prior to this I was a founding engineer and manager of Future Products at IVEX Corporation. There I helped develop visual systems for flight simulation and ASICs for real-time image processing. I was also a research engineer at Georgia Tech's Research Institute and a toll terminal engineer at Western Electric Corporation. For hobbies, I enjoy sailing (racing), metal and woodworking, photography, electronics, music....and pretty much what I do at work.
