Interests:
My interests have mostly centered around
database query processing. This initially led to my thesis work on indexing and
compression (with Uri Shaft and Raghu Ramakrishnan). Once I joined Microsoft, my interests (and
Paul Larson) led me to work on materialized views. This included view matching,
middle tier caching (with Hongfei Guo, Paul Larson, and Jingren Zhou), and partially materialized views (with
Paul Larson and Jingren Zhou). Along the way, I also had a fun opportunity to work with John
Platt in the DSP group at MSR on indexing for audio fingerprinting.
More recently, I have become interested in stream/event processing (with Roger Barga). In particular, I believe that stream systems are still in their infancy, and that we have “jumped the gun” on system semantics. We are therefore reexamining basic assumptions underlying today’s streaming and eventing systems. In the process, we hope to build the first truly “general purpose” streaming system.
