Background

I joined Microsoft Research Cambridge in May 2007, as a Post-Doc Researcher in the Socio-Digital Systems group. Previously I have studied Psychology at York, Ergonomics at Loughborough and researched for a PhD at the Mixed Reality Lab, University of Nottingham. I have also worked in consumer and social research for a number of consultancies and interned at MSRC twice.

Research Interests

I have a variety of research interests which at the moment I might broadly define as being concerned with Digital Ecologies. I'm interested in human behaviour and how a detailed understanding of the intricacies of this can inform technology design. But pushing back on that I'm interested in how new technologies in our environments can affect human behaviours, well designed thought provoking technologies often giving rise to new forms of expression and interaction. My work to date has focused on two broad areas, which I am currently involved in researching.

The first area is video-mediated communication and in particular remote gesturing systems, devices which essentially create new forms of remote collaboration. This work was largely the focus of my PhD research which considered the design of remote gesturing systems from a mixed ecology perspective. (More details on this can be found here).

The second area of work that I am actively exploring concerns the uses of digital media in the home and issues of family archiving. In particular the work is aiming to explore and understand the needs of families to interact with, manage and archive materials of sentimental value which are an integral part of preserving and sharing a record of family memories. And to understand how technologies might be designed to support or enhance these activities.
