Andre Hagehuelsmann is with the Computational Science group at the External Research Office.
My earliest interest when I was a little boy started with Earth Sciences – I think because that is about what you can most easily observe.
In secondary school I chose to focus my curriculum on Mathematics and Biology – math for the mind and bio for fun. I was always interested in exploring why things are they way they are.
At University I studied Geography with Biology and Informatics (1990-1995), first in my home town Muenster, then in Berlin at the Freie Universitaet, Technical University and the College for Applied Technologies. The studies took me back to my very early interest in Earth Sciences. I also subscribed to courses in Humanities until I concluded that my range of interests is to broad to be covered by any curriculum. My master thesis resulted in a vegetation map which I based on new classification methods of remote sensing data.
My PhD thesis (1995-1998) was then aiming at what would nowadays be called a „data-grid“ for geographic data – in particular allowing an integrated view on federated geographic databases which is considering multiple dimensions and spatial / temporal scales and resolutions.
Between 1995 and 2001 I spent several years with Intergraph, one of the world leaders in Geographic Information Systems.
I joint Microsoft then and I am now with the External Research Office at Microsoft Research Cambridge.
Current research projects:
Together with the University of Trento (Italy) and Stephen Emmott & Luca Cardelli I organised the Conference on Converging Sciences in Trento in December 2004.
I contributed to the Towards 2020 Science Report.
I initiated and organised the roundtable discussion THE WAY AHEAD which took place in Brussels on 9 November 2006. A preview of the summary is available here; please request the full summary by sending an email to me.
