Workshop Details

The workshop aims to bring together leaders in the field of location-aware computing to collectively examine the "big picture" issues, including the lessons learnt from current and past research, the state of real-world location-aware application deployments, and looking toward future key areas in this field.

Topics

A broad range of topics in location-aware computing will be covered, including:

  • Location sensing techniques - including new techniques and studies into the properties of existing techniques
  • Scenarios and applications for location-aware computing, including existing applications and looking forward to future applications.
  • Location-aware abstractions, platforms and frameworks, and their usefulness in particular applications and with particular sensing techniques.
  • The facilitation of deployment and everyday use of location-aware computing systems in workplaces, homes, and public spaces.
  • Privacy aspects of location-aware computing - protecting privacy, privacy-oriented location-aware systems, and how privacy affects the feasibility and usefulness of systems.
  • Other social issues in location-aware computing, including usability, user acceptance, and implications for human-computer interaction (HCI) and computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW)

Format

The workshop format is chosen to maximize interaction between participants, and facilitate the exchange of ideas. The morning sessions will consist of short invited talks, with each group of talks followed by a panel discussion with the speakers forming the panel.

The afternoon sessions will be organized around breakout groups to discuss key issues in location-aware computing. The groups will report back to the workshop in a plenary session, with a short presentation followed by panel-based discussion with the breakout group members forming the panel. A poster will also be produced by each group, to be displayed at the UbiComp 2003 poster sessions and also on this website.

Time Activity
09:00 Overview of aims of workshop
09:10 Introduce all participants
09:30 Three invited talks (15 minutes each including questions), followed by 30 minutes of panel discussion with speakers
10:45 Break
11:00 Three more invited talks with panel discussion, as above
12:15 Lunch with workshop participants
13:30 Open discussion and selection of topics for breakout groups and assignment of group membership
14:00 Discussion in breakout groups (including 15 minute break at group's discretion)
15:15 Breakout groups prepare posters and presentations
15:45 Breakout group presentations and panel discussions (20 minutes for each group)
17:30 Workshop conclusion

Breakout Discussions

The workshop will feature breakout discussions in order to ensure that input is solicited from every participant. These discussions will be based around pressing topics in the field, such as:

  • Location systems. Identify classifications, generalizations, and trends among various types of location systems. What qualities are likely to be demanded in practice and why?
  • Location-aware platforms. Compare existing platforms, including work in the areas of location representation, sensor fusion, interoperability, and so on. Consider areas for standardization, which may be necessary to facilitate widespread deployment of location-aware systems.
  • Location-aware applications. Attempt to identify new and potentially "killer" apps, and determine application-directed requirements for location systems and platforms - are these requirements being met?
  • Deployment techniques for location systems. Consider topics such as surveying of the location infrastructure, methods for learning about the environment (walls, furniture, etc). How easy are location-aware systems to deploy and how can this be improved?
  • Social implications of location-aware computing. Examine usability, user acceptance, privacy and security concerns of location awareness.
