Microsoft Mulan — a Bilingual TTS System
Microsoft Mulan
is the first real bilingual text-to-speech system. Our definition for bilingual
is to synthesize both Mandarin and English in the same engine. The advantages
for Mulan, comparing with other systems who
generate bilingual speech by switching between two engines, are: 1) Mulan
always keeps the sentence level intonation for each mix-lingual text input; 2)
both languages (Mandarin and English) are “spoken” by the same voice.
Each sentence is generated twice: once with our bilingual Mulan, denoted as A); the other is by switching between a Mandarin and an English TTS, denoted as B). Please listen to the examples and judge on whether Mulan sounds like a bilingual person.
