Background I have been working on computers since around 1982, when I first acquired an Atari 800 and learned the joys of programming in assembly language. After studying cinema production and philosophy at the University of Southern California, I joined the Advanced Technology Group at Apple Computer, Inc. At Apple I focused on the creation of authoring tools to support Rapid Prototyping. One of these tools was SK8, a powerful meta-authoring tool based on Macintosh Common Lisp. Later, for the Human Interface Group, I worked on the HyperMovie project, for interactive Quicktime Authoring. I left Apple to form ImaginEngine, a children's software company which developed the popular Awesome Animated Monster Maker titles. I was the CTO of ImaginEngine for 3 years. Next I came to Microsoft Research, where I spent 7 years working in the Social Computing Group. I am currently based in the Microsoft Research Asia lab in Beijing, China, where I am the Research Manager of the Center for Interaction Design. Research Interests My research interests are mostly around tools and techniques to support rapid prototyping of software. I view prototyping as an essential part of the design process, and am actively involved with efforts to evangelize prototyping both inside and outside of Microsoft. I am also interested in socially adept user interfaces, and computational experiences in general that preserve and enhance emotion. |
