External Research and University GroupsThe External Research and University Relations groups within Microsoft Research are dedicated to building world-class relationships with leading universities, government agencies, professional organizations, and industry partners to advance research, enhance the teaching and learning experience, inspire technological innovation, establish Microsoft as a valuable research and technology partner for higher education, and cultivate the next generation of thought leaders.

External Research & Programs — North America, Latin America
Managed by the Microsoft Research lab in Redmond, Washington, this group focuses on global and regional initiatives that advance the state of the art in computer science and computational sciences, and in the teaching of these disciplines. The engagement model emphasizes public requests for proposals and active collaboration with faculty to ensure maximum success for supported projects.

External Research Office — Europe, Middle East and Africa
The focus of the Cambridge, England-based group is to extend the scope of Microsoft Research into important new areas outside “core” computer science. This is being achieved through new types of strategic public-private collaborative research partnerships with universities, governments, and industry partners.

University Relations — Asia Pacific
From Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, China, this group acts as a bridge between Microsoft Research Asia and the academic community throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The goal is to build long-term, mutually beneficial relations by fostering advanced research, promoting academic exchanges, and cultivating tomorrow’s leading researchers. Although the majority of the team is based in Beijing, it has University Relations managers in Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Taipei, China; and Sydney, Australia.

External Research & Programs — India
This group, run by Microsoft Research in Bangalore, India, supports Microsoft Research India’s objective of fostering innovation through research and enhancing higher education in India. It accomplishes this through a variety or programs including research grants, conference support, Ph.D. fellowships, travel grants, and its work with universities, institutions, and schools to disseminate innovative curricula. The group has also started a unique series of summer schools that offer in-depth exposure to specific computing-research-related areas through some of the best known names in different fields.
