The Smart Personal Objects Technology group (SPOT) was formed in order to make everyday objects smarter through software and services. 

In order to achieve this vision we created some revolutionary new technologies, including Microsoft DirectBand®, a cost effective and power-efficient wireless network using FM radio towers covering over 120 markets in the US and Canada. We also developed the .NET Micro Framework, an implementation of .NET for small embedded devices. These technologies are used in devices that receive the MSN Direct service.
