Research
InterestsTom is leading the effort to load a one
Terabyte SQL Server database on NT Server in cooperation with
Digital Equipment Corporation, the SPIN-2 Satellite imaging
company, the United States Geological Survey (USGS), UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) Alexandria Digital Library,
and Microsoft's Geography Business Unit. Microsoft's Geography unit creates Encarta
World Atlas, Automap Streets, and Trip Planner.
This project demonstrates that NT and SQL
Server can support huge databases. It is also pioneering the use
of SQL Server as a store for spatial data. Here is a photo of Tom with his machine
sans terabyte and the 320 disks to hold the terabyte. The idea is to load 1-meter and
2-meter resolution imagery of earth's surface. Currently, we are developing the
next version of the user interface. You can try it out by clicking here.
