Microsoft Medical Media Lab Internship Program

Learn more about the opportunities at the Microsoft Medical Media Lab.

Researchers interested in building technologies that save lives and can change the future of healthcare are encouraged to apply for opportunities within the Microsoft Medical Media Lab (M3 Lab) in Washington D.C.

The M3 Lab is an active, enthusiastic, energetic lab dedicated to Healthcare Concept Development. Projects span a wide range of advanced technologies including: ultra wideband tracking and RFID, data visualization, search in healthcare, communications, surface computing, augmented and virtual reality, and robotics.

M3 Lab researchers can split their time between Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington and also the nation’s capital in Washington D.C. After researching the latest technologies on the campuses of Microsoft Research, researchers deploy their technologies into live clinical care at leading hospitals in the nation located in Washington D.C..

Researchers have the opportunity to see their technology make a difference in patient's lives. Opportunities are available year-round, range from 36 months, and include funding for travel, housing, software and hardware, and a stipend.

Here are a few current Healthcare Concept Development areas:

Medication Reconciliation

Today, hospitals have great difficulty capturing the list of medications from a person as they enter a hospital and successfully reconciling the medications as they leaveso nothing is forgotten. Changes in doses, routes, drug classes and formulations are difficult to semantically correlate. Design and apply the optimal technologies to help hospitals solve the important medication reconciliation challenge.

eDocumentation

50% of a nurse's day is spent entering data into computers. New technologies abound to capture digital information. Create the optimal design for software to capture data from healthcare workers who are using keyboards, mice, Ink, Speech, or all in tandem.

Automated Care Team Identification

Nurses, residents, medical students, consultants and clinicians change shift in hospitals every 812 hours. Not only is it difficult for patients to keep track of the names of all of these individuals but care teams and providers rarely know who or where these individuals may be as well. Build optimized algorithms to automatically identify care team members to share with families, and the care team, based from access data in the EMR.

Surface Computing

Microsoft Surface technology has opened new opportunities for collaborative exploration and knowledge sharing. Build collaborative data visualization and interaction tools on this exciting new platform to enhance delivered care.

Web 2.0 in the Healthcare Enterprise

Web 2.0 has been described (by some) to mean the emergent benefits gained when users become not only consumers of content, but collaborative creators of content as well. Build new social networks to harness the collaborative, creative powers of the members of the healthcare enterprise to collectively improve the quality of delivered care.

Enterprise Healthcare Search

Apply Web-type search technologies to data-cores within the hospital enterprise to meet knowledge and informational needs that previously could not be met.

Augmented Reality

Healthcare is one of the few fields where the placement of timely ambient knowledge can save lives on a routine basis. The use of "Data Lenses" and other forms of Augmented Reality have the potential to infuse the very fabric of a hospital with data that can save lives. Design and build the "data lenses" that can serve as windows into worlds of ambient clinical knowledge.

Communications

Critical to clinical care is rapid, effective communication. Build technologies to unify and optimize communication technologies, such as e-mail, voicemail, VoIP, instant messaging, white-boarding, collaborative case review, and intra-hospital teleconferencing.

RFID in Healthcare

The M3 Lab MidAtlantic testbed hospital in Washington D.C. is the world's largest civilian deployment of ultra wideband tracking technology. Build technologies to demonstrate how tracking technologies can make a difference in patient's lives.

Ultra-Scale Displays in Healthcare

Large video displays are rapidly dropping in price. Within a decade, wall-sized displays could be common across healthcare. Build the display interfaces that will span the walls of the healthcare enterprises of the future.

Full Media Encounter Capture

Providers spend vast amounts of time documenting encounters with patients. Capturing audio or video data using technologies like SenseCam throughout a clinician's day could replace the onerous documentation requirements driving up costs and draining efficiencies in healthcare. Design the systems to ubiquitously and automatically capture the audio and video encounters of patients in the hospital.

Natural Language Processing in Healthcare

Gartner estimates 80% of data in healthcare is unstructured. Extracting structured data from unstructured data is considered the "next" important development that could dramatically impact the quality of delivered care. Build and apply NLP tools to solve data extraction and meta-tagging challenges across enterprise healthcare.

Apply for an internship.
