Internship FAQ

Get answers to frequently asked questions about internships.

What could I expect to do at Microsoft for the summer?
Microsoft Research interns share the same job responsibilities as full-time employees. You’ll be given real work with tremendous problems to solve. As an intern, you’ll be working right alongside full-time employees as part of a team. Together with your mentor (that is, your guide) or manager, you’ll identify a problem to work on that meets your and a Microsoft Research group’s interests.

When do internships take place? How long do internships last?
We ask that interns stay for a minimum of 12 weeks — long enough to really dive into a project and make a significant contribution. Most of our North America internship opportunities are available in the summer months, but we’ll work with you to set your start and end dates any time throughout the year. Internships can last as long as a year, under special circumstances.

Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to apply for an internship in the U.S.?
We’ll consider all qualified candidates, regardless of citizenship or visa status, and put you in touch with one of our immigration professionals to walk you through the process.

What qualifications do I need to be an intern at Microsoft Research India?
You must be a student enrolled in a relevant field of study, such as computer science, engineering, and mathematics, but for the TEM group, we also look for good students in the social sciences. We are biased towards PhD candidates, but will also accept strong Master’s students and late-year undergraduates with a serious interest in research.

Do I have to be an Indian citizen to apply for an internship in India?
We consider all qualified candidates who are interested in doing an internship in Bangalore, regardless of citizenship or visa status. You will be required to have an Indian passport or work visa to work. We will help you with that process.
