Microsoft is pleased to announce the Microsoft Research Latin American Internship and Fellowship Program
for 2008-2009. This program awards internships and fellowships to graduate students from Latin American
universities. In addition to offering salaried 12-week internships in our Microsoft Research lab in Redmond, Washington,
Microsoft will award 2-year fellowships to outstanding Ph.D. students. Applications will be accepted through
the Latin American and Caribbean Collaborative ICT Research Federation (LACCIR) only. Please contact the
chair of your Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering department to apply.
Provisions of the Fellowship Award
- The fellowship recipient award will cover 100% of the tuition and fees.
- A stipend is provided to cover living expenses while in school ($15,000 per year).
- A conference and travel allowance is provided for recipients to attend
professional conferences or seminars ($5,000 per year).
- All fellowship recipients will have the opportunity to complete a salaried 12-week internship during each year of their fellowship at Microsoft Research in Redmond, Washington.
- Fellowships are awarded to recipients for two academic years only and not available for extension.
Eligibility
Criteria
- Preference will be given to students nominated by their universities and completing
their second or third year in a PhD program at a credentialed university in Latin America.
- Applicants must be enrolled in Computer Science, Computer
Engineering, and Electrical Engineering departments (if your department is within
the scope of these areas, but is titled differently, you are eligible) and must remain enrolled
in their department's PhD program for the period of the award or forfeit the award.
- A maximum of three (3) applicants per department for a total of nine (9)
applicants per university will be tracked. If you wish to be nominated by your department, you must
submit your name for consideration by 15 August 2008.
- Payment of the fellowship awards, as described above,
will be made directly to the university and is not transferable to another academic
institution or department. The recipient must remain enrolled in a PhD program during the
period of the award or forfeit the award.
Required Application Information
- The deadline for applications is 31 August 2008.
- Applications must include: Applicant's thesis proposal confirmed and approved
by the PhD program authorities, applicant's curriculum vitae, and three (3) letters of reference
from established researchers familiar with the applicant’s research. Of these letters, one (1) letter of
recommendation should come from the student's advisor and the other two (2) letters should come from
within the nominating institution.
- Applications must be submitted in English only.
- Applications will be accepted from 14 July 2008 through 11:59 PM PST (Pacific Standard Time) on 31 August 2008.
- Applications must be submitted online in any of the following formats:
Word document, text-only file, PDF. All application materials must be submitted by the student,
but we will give preference to students nominated by their universities.
- Applications will be accepted only when submitted via the
online application system.
E-mailed applications will not be considered.
- Applications submitted to Microsoft will not be returned. Microsoft cannot assume
responsibility for the confidentiality of information in submitted applications. Therefore, applications should
not contain information that is confidential, restricted, or sensitive. Microsoft reserves the right to make public
information from applications that receive awards, except those portions containing budgetary or personally identifiable information.
- Incomplete applications cannot be
considered, and notification of incompleteness will not be made.
Applications must be received no later than 11:59 PM PST
(Pacific Standard Time) on Sunday, 31 August 2008. The online
application system will no longer be active after the
application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted.
Final award decisions will be announced at the LACCIR site as
soon as award winners are notified.
- Due to the volume of submissions, Microsoft Research cannot provide
individual feedback on applications that do not receive fellowship awards.

region may apply via the online application system beginning 14 July 2008. Preference will be given to
students nominated by their universities and completing their second or third year in a PhD program. An
approved thesis proposal is required for application for the Fellowship Program. A maximum of three (3)
applicants per department for a total of nine (9) applicants per university will be tracked. Any department
