China Information World, Dec. 3, 2007

Summary:

China Information World published a two-page (over 4000 characters) top story on Microsoft Research Asia’s progress over the years, including the research results it has obtained and the efforts it has put into cultivating talents to achieve innovation, all based on an interview conducted with Managing Director Hsiao-Wuen Hon. Four eye-catching pictures of Hsiao-Wuen Hon and Baohua Liu, Deputy Chief Editor of China Information World as well as the interviewer were included.

The article lists Microsoft Research Asia’s three large advantages, including an extremely broad range of products, with Microsoft as the world’s largest IT company, and thus a broad range of talents; close contact with users to deeply comprehend their needs; and Microsoft’s culture of competing with the self. It is stressed that Microsoft’s close relationship with schools and cooperation with industry partners in China not only boosts its own development, but also ensures the success of the entire industry chain in the country.

Hsiao-Wuen Hon firstly defines the purpose of Microsoft Research Asia, saying that together with Microsoft’s other research institutes around the world, it plays a critical role in setting the future for Microsoft. As the institute is approaching its 10th year, it has already become a valuable component of the company. In response to the growing possibilities of the Internet, Microsoft Research Asia has launched Research 2.0 to target the influence of the Internet on users, focusing on the concept of using the web to conduct research. Microsoft is determined to stay in the lead of cutting edge technology to better serve users around the world.

The open and unrestricted culture at Microsoft Research Asia is also described. The underlying key is to hire the best talents, and then once they join the team, let them roam free in terms of research topic and direction. As Microsoft Research Asia is committed to developing the products of the future, creative ideas are highly encouraged, where a thoughtful imagination leads to brilliant results. With team work and comments, challenges and criticisms when appropriate, the team is able to realize their full potential in a positive environment, once again contributing to China’s growth.
