Microsoft's Secret Weapon
Global Entrepreneurs
Global Entrepreneurs published a three-page top story on Microsoft's new strategies to conquer its competitors and secure its leadership in the industry. Faced with many challenges from competitors such as Google and Yahoo, including the speed of its product development and the appropriate area of focus, Microsoft is undeterred and confidently strides forward to a bright future with a new angle to progress. Talked about in detail are the establishment of Microsoft's new ISRC and the entire company's adoption of a new work method begun at Microsoft Research Asia.
Microsoft is intent on raising its reputation in the stock market. Currently, the search business has the highest market price in internet services, an area that Microsoft will highly increase focus on, as success in this area will greatly impact Microsoft's future. In response to this issue, Harry Shum has been appointed to lead a completely new R&D institute: Internet Service Research Center (ISRC). Wei-Ying Ma, Research Area Manager of the Web Search & Data Mining Group at Microsoft Research Asia, believes that "Microsoft is at the frontier of search research." However, they will need to "develop a more efficient development process as to more quickly integrate new innovations into products."
Microsoft Research Asia has been recognized by many as a relatively efficient research institute. In the past few years, it has transferred over 200 technological developments into Microsoft products, and has published around 1500 theses. More importantly, under Harry Shum's leadership, Microsoft Research Asia has experimented with the work method of having collaborations between researchers and the engineers, precisely focused on Internet search. Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, believes that Harry Shum should apply this work method in the ISRC to quicken the progress of Microsoft's search services.
Microsoft has a solid foundation for pictures, voices and video; once these multimedia techniques are combined with search products, Microsoft is confident that it will be able to outrun competitors in multimedia technology and search products. New areas of research such as Re-Search and searching in Word are under development, through which it can be easily seen that Microsoft and its research institutes are determined to excel.
