Multimodal User Interface
Overview
The Multimodal User Interface Group at MSR Asia is exploring research in
advanced natural user interface technologies. Natural communication with
machines or with other people via machines is critical to bringing the
benefits of networked computers to the mass market. A computer's user
interface must cater to the human senses of sight, sound, and touch,
which are used to navigate physical surroundings. New technologies are
emerging that can support human-machine communications with features
that are natural to humans. The challenge is learning how to use these
still imperfect technologies to transcend the benefits of a single
modality. A Glimpse at Several Core Innovations:
Smart Digital Ink One of the revolutionary features of the Tablet PC is its ink technology. Smart digital ink allows a user to think in ink and write in their handwriting. The group's current research interests include an advanced digital ink parsing, digital ink annotation, and novel ink user interface. Multi-modal Human-Computer Interaction Device
The user interface desktop metaphor is being challenged by ubiquitous
computing with Internet connection. With its expressiveness, mobility,
and ease of use, ink and pen computing is one of the most exciting
technologies and can help people interact with any computing device.
With advanced ink and pen computing technology, the pen can be one of
the most important interactive devices for the desktop PC, Tablet PC and
Pocket PC, facilitating more functionality than simple text input.
