Research of the Machine Learning group at the Microsoft Research New York City lab spans a wide variety of topics within theoretical and applied machine learning, including learning from interactive data (e.g., contextual bandits and reinforcement learning), online learning, natural language processing, and topics related to interpretability and fairness of ML and AI.

Our main current focus is on building Intelligent Decision Making agents. We seek to create agents that learn to understand their environment to make reliable routine decisions on behalf of people and organizations. Such agents must be capable of intelligently interacting with real world (experimentation), and meaningfully use discovered information (learning).
