Projects

iCampus: iCampus is a 5 year, 5 million dollar per year alliance between Microsoft Research and MIT. The objective of this alliance is to advance our knowledge of learning science and technology in university engineering education. For more information visit the iCampus portal.

Conferencing Experience Project: The Conferencing Experience Project, ConferenceXP, is a research and development initiative that integrates recent advances in high performance audio, video and network technologies to seamlessly connect multiple distant participants in a rich immersive environment for distance learning, conferencing and collaboration. ConferenceXP provides an extensible foundation for interactive collaborative environments, and serves as a research platform for designing and implementing distance conferencing and learning applications. For more information visit the ConferenceXP Community Site.

Learning Experience Project: The objective of the Learning Experience Project is to partner with Universities and other research organizations to design and build applications that leverage the ConferenceXP platform, together with mobile devices and wireless LANs, to build rich, engaging learning experiences. The vision of this project is best summed up by the Learning Experience Project video (Med, High).

Gaming in Education:
For more information visit the iCampus portal.

Learning Federation: The Learning Federation is being formed as a private/public research consortium to unite funding, talent, expertise and momentum to accelerate both research and development of new learning environments that will dramatically improve education and workforce training. Itis designed to support the research needed to make new learning models possible, focusing upon the needs of post-secondary learning in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. For more information visit the Learning Federation website.

LESTER Database: LESTER (Learning Science and Technology Repository) is an online community and database focused on innovations in learning science and technology (LST). LESTER profiles innovative research projects, researchers, organizations, and funding sources. For more information visit the LESTER website.

Our VIP Model

Our VIP model: validate technology in education, implement solutions in and beyond the classroom, and partner for grand challenge transformation in education.

Our vision is to research learning technologies that will help to transform the educational experience into a learner centric, instructor managed distributed immersive learning environment.

Our goal is to ensure that the next generation of learning technologies will have increased educational value for industry, government and academia, measured by 2-sigma increases in learning outcomes.

Our strategy is to integrate emerging learning science research with emerging technologies. We define learning science as a multidisciplinary research agenda including cognitive science, educational and instructional technology, anthropology, computer science and information science. We envision emerging technologies to include pen based computing, mobile and wireless technologies, MEMs based technologies, and rich visualization technologies (i.e., video, animation, gaming, 3D environments).
