FHL Computer
Orientation for Symposia Participants
Before connecting your
personal computer to the FHL network it must be fully patched and
virus-protected. This means that all operating system critical patches have
been applied and there is a fully functioning up-to-date anti-virus program
installed. Please take care of this BEFORE arrival. If your machine has not been updated for a
while, it may take more than an hour to bring it up to date, and in some cases
it will be impossible for you to use our network. Windows XP machines must be running Service
Pack 2 (+ current updates); Windows 95 and 98 are not supported.
If you are certain that
you are up-to-date with patches and virus protection, then you may connect to
the network as described below. If you
have any doubt, or don't know the last time that you patched your system, then
you must first talk with our Computer Techs, Alan Cairns (cairns@u.washington.edu)
or Craig Staude (staude@u.washington.edu).
Before connecting your
FULLY PATCHED computer to our network, you must provide us with your COMPUTER
NAME, your HARDWARE ADDRESS (six pairs of alpha-numeric characters), and other
information. To obtain this info:
On a PC: Start->Run->"cmd" (or "command")
In the command window that comes up type the command "ipconfig
/all". The name and address
will be shown.
On a Mac: You will find the hardware address in: Blue
Apple->About this Mac->
More Info...->Network->Built-in
Ethernet or Airport
And for computer name on a Mac: Blue
Apple->System Preferences->Sharing

NOTE: The UW router system will detect unusual
network traffic coming from an individual machine, suggesting that your
computer has been compromised by hacker activity. In this case, your computer will be
automatically blocked from access outside the UW domains. If you notice this behavior, contact our IT
staff as soon as possible.
Printers:
Xerox DocuPrint
2125N Printers are available in the Commons (140.142.199.174)
and the Lecture Hall (140.142.199.179)
Printer drivers are
available from Xerox (http://www.xerox.com),
however Windows XP and Mac OSX should have the drivers for the 2125N.
Printers are best connected via IP port using their IP address (use the
12 digit numbers listed above when creating a Windows local IP port or when
using Macintosh IP Printing).
You may need to add paper
yourself. Printer paper is kept at the
back of the Library, under the table near the Xerox machines. All printers can print to both sides of a
page. This is called "Duplex printing" and it saves a lot of paper. Please
use it.
Our wireless
network is available in the Dorms, Commons, Dining
Hall, Lecture Hall, and in most housing units.
This is a closed network that does not advertise its presence. You must specify the network name as
"FHL" and turn off encryption.
It often takes a 2-3 minutes for the connection
to be established. If the signal is weak
in your housing unit, try moving closer to a window, or to another location.
