This talk will introduce the area of Linguistics to the participants of the Summer School on NLP.  Topics covered will be the traditional layers – Morphology, Phonology, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics & beyond.  The Morphology would be emphasized as the Summer School includes a Morphology lab in Indian languages.

In addition, the speaker would involve the students on examples drawn from south Asian languages.  No prerequisite is expected for this lecture, though some familiarity with the languages themselves would be desirable.
