With Plumbago, you can take great looking notes easily. Whether you're writing, sketching ideas, or doodling designs, Plumbago offers the tools you need to easily capture them.

On the Home screen in Plumbago, you see your notebooks. Here you can add a new notebook or change the title, cover color, or paper type of an existing notebook.


The Home screen displays your notebooks.

Selecting on a notebook opens it. Here you can write or draw on a page in your notebook. You can also add pictures.

On your pages, you'll find the Toolbar and Radial menu.

About the Toolbar

On the Toolbar, you'll find navigation, import, export, touch, and setting options. You can choose to have the Toolbar appear on the left (default) or right side of your paper.

Home icon Home  Return to the home screen, which displays all of your notebooks.

View all pages icon Grid view  See all of the pages in your notebook and go to any page.

Navigate or draw mode  Switch between drawing or navigating with your finger or mouse.

add, move, or delete picture icon Add, resize, move, or delete pictures  Add a picture, or resize, move, or delete an existing picture.

Save  Save the page you're currently on as a JPEG image.

settings icon Settings  Specify the handwriting improvement level and where you want the Toolbar to appear.

undo iconUndo  Erase the last line you added. Plumbago supports unlimited undos for each session.

About the Radial menu

Here you'll find your pencil, pen, and highlighter writing tools, as well as selection and erasing tools. You can change the color and width of your writing tools, as well as the width of the eraser tool. To view more colors, swipe to spin the colors in either direction. By clicking the grabber arrows in the center, you can move the Radial menu anywhere on your page.


After you select the Pen, Pencil, or Highlighter tool in the Radial menu, you can choose the size and color. Swipe either direction to spin and view more colors.


After you make a selection with the Selection tool, you can choose to copy, cut, or paste your selection.


After you select the Eraser tool, you can choose the size. You can also choose to erase everything on the page.

About using a stylus

You can use a stylus with Plumbago. If you're using a device that does not support a stylus, Plumbago will enable finger draw automatically. Depending on the device and stylus you're using, you can use the end of the stylus as an eraser. For example, you can use the end of Surface Pro Pen for Surface Pro 4 stylus as an eraser. To use the end of the Surface Pro Pen for Surface Pro 3 as an eraser, click the left click button.

Manage notebooks

Plumbago enables you to create an unlimited number of notebooks. You can also specify the color of the cover, paper type, and name your notebooks.

Editing your notebook screen enables you to name your notebook, as well as select the cover color and paper type.

Add a new notebook

  1. On the Home screen, select add icon.
  2. On the top of the screen, in the text box, type the name you want.
  3. Select the cover to expand the colors choices, and then select the color you want.
  4. Select the paper type to expand the paper type choices, and then select the paper type you want.
  5. Select okay icon .

Change the name, color, or paper of a notebook

  1. On the Home screen, in the lower-right corner on the notebook you want to edit, select edit icon.
  2. Make the changes you want, and then select okay icon.

Delete a notebook

  1. On the Home screen, in the lower-right corner on the notebook you want to delete, select edit icon.
  2. In the lower left corner, select delete icon.

Take notes

After you open a notebook, you see the Radial menu and Toolbar on the page. The Radial menu gives you easy access to writing, selection, and eraser tools. The Toolbar provides additional options, such as navigation, sharing, and undo. In each session in a notebook, you can undo an unlimited number of actions.

Use the Pencil tool

  1. In the Radial menu, select pencil tool icon.
  2. Select the pencil size you want.
  3. Select the color you want.
    The Pencil tool changes color to the one you selected.

Copy, cut, or paste lines

  1. In the Radial menu, select the Selection tool selection tool.
  2. Draw around the lines you want to select them with the dotted-line lasso.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • To copy, select copy icon.
    • To cut, select cut icon.
    • To paste, select paste icon.

Erase lines

  1. In the Radial menu, select the Eraser tool eraser icon.
  2. Select the eraser size you want.
  3. Drag through the lines you want to erase.

Add a picture

  1. In the Toolbar, select add, move, or delete picture icon, and then in the menu, select Add a picture.
  2. Select the picture you want, and then select Open.

Move, resize, or delete a picture

  1. In the Toolbar, select add, move, or delete picture icon, and then in the menu, select Modify pictures.
    Plumbago switches into picture editing mode.
  2. On your page, do one of the following:
    • To move a picture, select the one you want and drag it to a new location.
    • To resize a picture, pinch or zoom the picture to the size you want.
    • To delete a picture, in the top right corner of the one you want to delete, select delete icon.
  3. Select anywhere on your page to return to drawing mode.

Navigate in and between notebooks

On the My notebooks home screen, you can view all of your notebooks. You can also select to view help or the tutorial.

In an open notebook, Plumbago displays the number of the page you're on in the lower portion of the Toolbar. It also appears, along the with the name of your notebook, in the center of your page as you swipe or when you double tap the page.

Customize Plumbago

Plumbago can help smooth out, or normalize, your handwriting as you write with the Handwriting smoothing option. You can specify the how much improvement you want by adjusting the slider control.

Change the handwriting smoothing level

  1. On the Toolbar, select settings icon.
  2. In the Settings pane, under Handwriting smoothing, choose the level you want.
  3. Select outside the pane to close it.

  2. In the Settings pane, under Toolbar alignment, choose the option you want.
  3. Select outside the pane to close it.

Keyboard shortcuts

The following table lists the available keyboard shortcuts for common tasks in Plumbago. For keyboard shortcuts in which you press two or more keys simultaneously, the keys are separated by a plus sign (+). For shortcuts in which you press one key immediately followed by another key, the keys are separated by a comma ( , ).
