JPEG XR File Format Plug-in for Photoshop

This plug-in extends Photoshop to load and save JPEG XR images.  JPEG XR is an ITU/ISO standard for image compression.   The JPEG XR format has many advantages over JPEG and PNG, the two most commonly used formats on the web today.  The following table briefly highlights the capabilites of JPEG XR:
Better Compression At similar quality JPEG XR images are 50%-75% the size of JPEG images.  This means that when they are used in a web page can be downloaded 1.3x to 2x faster, resulting in faster page load times.
Lossless Compression JPEG XR features a continuous quality scale from lossless (like PNG) to lossy (like JPEG).  Which means it features the best of both formats and anywhere in between.
Transparency JPEG XR images can optionally contain an alpha channel.  Alpha is a feature of PNG but not JPEG.  But, JPEG XR also features high compression ratios (unlike PNG), which means JPEG XR file sizes can be 1/5th the size of PNG, again resulting in much faster page load times.
Higher bitdepth support The JPEG XR format can store 16bit/component or 32 bit/component images (in other works HDR).  Prior to JPEG XR you needed to use more esoteric formats like RAW or OpenEXR to get these features.
Tiled structure The internal file structure of JPEG XR allows for rapid region-of-interest decoding.  This allows applications to save time by only decoding a portion of an image if necessary.
Compressed-domain edits Cropping, flips, and rotate by 90 degree operations can all be performed on the compressed bitstream with no loss in image quality.

  1. Download the plug-in from the Microsoft Research site for Windows or Mac.

For Windows:

  1. Extract the contents of the zip file.  There are two Adobe Export plug-in files (.8bi)
    • JPEGXR_x86.8bi for the 32-bit version of Photoshop or for all versions of Photoshop Elements
    • JPEGXR_x64.8bi for the 64-bit version of Photoshop.
  2. Copy the plug-in to the appropriate Photoshop plug-in folder, these are typically the following.
    • 32-bit Photoshop: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\File Formats
    • 64-bit Photoshop: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\File Formats
    • Photoshop Elements: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\Plug-Ins\File Formats

For Mac:

  1. Extract the contents of the zip file.  There is one Universal Binary - JPEGXR.plugin
  2. Copy the plug-in to the appropriate Photoshop plug-in folder, these are typically the following.
    • Photoshop: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS5.1/Plug-ins/File  Formats/
    • Photoshop Elements: /Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 10/Support Files/Plug-Ins/File Formats/

Instructions for Use
