The Microsoft Bay Area Research Center (BARC) was founded. BARC researchers work primarily on issues that involve scalable servers and the future of virtual communication, or “telepresence.” Jim Gray was hired to lead BARC.

Jim GrayGordon Bell, known as the “the father of Digital’s VAX minicomputer,” was hired at BARC.

His project, MyLifeBits, aims to help you store your life online—from documents to telephone conversations to photographs. In 1945, Vannevar Bush envisioned a device he called a “memex” that would record everything he’d read, recorded, or communicated. Bell has realized Bush’s memex as part of his MyLifeBits project.

BBT, an optimization tool developed by Microsoft Research, helped programmers develop and ship Windows® 95 and Office 95. Researchers contributed to the Answer Wizard in Office 95. This feature combines text analysis with user behavior to suggest help topics.
