I have been a Senior Director of Microsoft Asia-Pacific R&D Group, in charge of China Innovation since 2010. From 2008 to 2010, I was a Director responsible for Microsoft Education Product; from 2006 to 2008, I was a Director responsible for R&D strategy in China; and from 1999 to 2006, I was leading the Multimedia Collaboration group at Microsoft Research, Redmond, USA.

Research and Development

My areas of interest include Web multimedia search, computer vision, signal processing, machine learning, and their applications in communication, collaboration, and multimedia systems. I was best known for my contribution to image/video search, indexing, and retrieval. Because of that contribution, in 2010 I became an IEEE Fellows and an ACM Distinguished Scientist. According to Google Scholar citation, two of my papers have been each cited 1,300+ times and 12 additional papers have each been cited 100+ times. In 2010, one of my papers also won the "Most Cited Paper of the Decade Award" from JVCIR.

I contribute equally strongly to product development. I hold 40+ US and international patents. I developed the first shot boundary detection technique for Microsoft MovieMaker V1.0 in 1999. My team and I contributed several key technologies to Live Meeting, Office Communicator, and Media Server from 2000 to 2006. I am one of the founding members of Microsoft Office RoundTable, an innovative distribute meeting system shipped in 2007. While I was leading the Education Product Group in China, the team shipped Linked Note Taking – one of the top features for ON 2010 and Interactive Classroom – one of the first products shipped out of the Education Group.

I am an Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Multimedia Magazine, and an Associate Editor of ACM Transactions on Multimedia Computing Communication and Applications (TOMCCAP). I am also on the advisory board of IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering. I was an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology 2006-2010, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia 2004-2008, ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems Journal 2005-2007, and was on the Editorial Board of International Journal of Multimedia Tools and Applications 2005-2007. I was on Organizing Committees and Program Committees of numerous conferences including ACM Multimedia, IEEE CVPR, IEEE ECCV, IEEE ACCV, IEEE ICIP, IEEE ICASSP, IEEE ICME, SPIE ITCom, ICPR, CIVR, among others. I was a General Chair of PCM 2011, ICIMCS 2010, ACM Multimedia 2009 and CIVR 2006. I am on the ACM SIG Multimedia Executive Committee, Steering Committees of ACM Multimedia, IEEE ICME, ACM ICMR and PCM. I am the Chair of ACM SIG Multimedia Beijing Chapter.

I am a Fellow of IEEE and a Distinguished Member of ACM.
