Due to the heavy emphasis on faces and windows in the image above, the epitome of the image contains mostly various corners and edge elements organized into squished windows, as well as a few facial patterns. We marked the most heavily used facial patterns with a short horizontal red-green segment centered at the nose. Then, we projected the segment back into the image according to the epitome mapping, resulting in face detection. (To detect all faces in the image, the other facial patterns in the epitome should be employed, too.) This example illustrates generalization properties of the epitome as a representation for visual memory.
