Microsoft Research Songsmith allows novice musicians to get a taste of original music creation, just by singing into a microphone, and provides songwriters with an “intelligent scratchpad” to explore new musical ideas. It’s totally sweet. Try it.

I’m a researcher in the CUE group (Computational User Experiences) at Microsoft Research.

My current research interests include:

• Making medical records more intuitive to patients (e.g. patient-friendly-displays)

• Input systems for natural user interfaces (e.g. always-available interfaces, Skinput)

• Computer support for musical composition (e.g. Songsmith, other music projects)

My previous research interests have included:

• Haptics and physical simulation (e.g. deformation simulation, haptic mentoring)

• Neural prosthetics (including a stint at CyberKinetics)

We’re frequently looking for interns in all of these areas. If you’re creative, you’re a bit of a hacker-type (we like to build stuff), and you’re interested spending some time in Seattle, drop me a line.

I’m also an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, where I hang out and/or collaborate with the folks in the dub group.
