    Microsoft Research Asia established in November 1998, which was formally named as Microsoft Research China until November 2001. It is located in Beijing as the second largest basic research institution besides the one in U.S.

     

    Through research and hunt for innovations, we are in hope to eventually enable future computers to be capable of watching, listening and learning and communicate with human in natural languages. Besides, we also expect to allow computers and Internet in China and entire Asia to be used so popular, convenient and easy as they are in other countries and regions. Currently Microsoft Research Asia owns over 300 excellent research staff.

     

    

    January 1999
    Dr. Ya-Qin Zhang, one of world-class experts in the field of multi-media, joined Microsoft Research China, holding positions of both assistant managing director and chief scientist.
    January 1999
    “Microsoft Experts and Advisors Committee” was established. At present, advisors of the committee includes Pan Yunhe, principal of Zhejiang University, Chi Huisheng, principal of Peking University, Zhang Bo, professor of Tsinghua University, Victor Zue, professor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. Liu Minglei, honorable professor of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Zheng Nanning, deputy principal of Xi’an Jiaotong University.

    “Microsoft Scholarship Program” started up, aiming at leaving most excellent talents in the field of computer in china for the purpose of conducting research, meanwhile offering them all-around financial assistances.
    March 1999
    Microsoft Research China declared to donate authentic Microsoft software worth 15 million yuan to ten key universities such as Tsinghua University, Peking University and University of Science and Technology of China.
    June 1999
    Microsoft Research China held the academic symposium on “Computing in the 21st Century” which drew 1500-odd Chinese scholars. At the same time, it invited many successful overseas scholars such as Turing Award recipients Dr. Butler Lampson and Prof. Ray Reddy, thus becoming the highest-level academic exchange activity in recent years in China.
    August 1999
    Dr. Harry Shum, chief researcher of Microsoft Research China gave a brilliant keynote speech, indicating another important progress in fields of computer vision and graphics, while the only keynote speech made by a Chinese at the global tiptop graphic academic conference in the latest one decade.
    October 1999
    Microsoft Research China and Information Science Department of National Natural Science Foundation of China signed a cooperative agreement. Both sides would conduct extensive cooperation in the field of basic research in the coming five years. The agreement indicates cooperation between Microsoft Research China and domestic academic circle was pushed to a new height.
    October 1999
    Microsoft Research China reported to Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft for the first time. Kaifu Lee introduced the 6 “P” strategies of the research institution to Mr. Gates. The 6 “P” strategies included people, programs, publications, patents, prototypes and product impact. Based on the successful report, Mr. Gates highly praised each progress made by the research institution.
    November 5, 1999
    Microsoft Research China celebrated its first anniversary in Beijing. In the short one year, it not only grew to be a research institution laying preliminary foundation, but also made fruitful achievements in terms of academic research. Researchers were grown from two at the beginning to 60 at present. They publicized 28 dissertations on internationally classic publications and were going to publish the first collection of dissertations of Microsoft Research China.
