Staying in Touch with Friends: Technology Use by Children with Chronic Health Conditions

Microsoft Research is looking for parents/caregivers/carers of children who have a chronic health condition to fill out a 10-minute survey with questions on how their child stays in touch with friends when they are away from friends because of various factors from their condition.

In addition, we also ask that the child fill out a 10-minute survey on their experiences of staying in touch with their friends. The child's survey does not have to be done in the same sitting.

Participants may be eligible to be entered in a sweepstakes and win a $100 USD gift card (equivalent to a £67.25 gift card) after submitting their response. Each family (parent and child) will have one entry only. The raffle will end on August 20, 2013 at 11:59 PM PDT. Official rules for the raffle are below.

If you do not live in the United States, Canada (excluding Quebec), or the United Kingdom, you will not be eligible to be entered in the sweepstakes, but we still strongly encourage your participation as it can help guide future design research for children with chronic health conditions!

The survey can be found here:

You are eligible to enter the Sweepstakes if:

    • You are a resident of the 50 U.S. (includes D.C.), the United Kingdom, or Canada (void in Quebec) and are a parent or legal guardian of a child between the ages of 5 – 18 who suffers from a diagnosed chronic health condition; and

The Sweepstakes begins at 12:01 am PT on July 19, 2013 and ends on 11:59 pm PT on August 20, 2013 (“Entry Period”).

You will receive one Sweepstakes entry when you complete the "Parent" section and your child completes the "Child" section and  you submit the “Staying in Touch with Friends” survey during the Entry Period. The survey will be used to determine how children communicate with friends remotely while experiencing chronic illness. Any information provided by a minor must be supervised and approved by their parent or legal guardian, who is entering this Sweepstakes. All survey information submitted will be confidential. At the conclusion of the survey you will be given the opportunity to submit your Sweepstakes entry by providing a correct email address, which will be used for winner notification.

Limit one entry per person. We are not responsible for entries that we do not receive for any reason, or for entries that we receive but are not decipherable for any reason. We will automatically disqualify:

    • Any incomplete or illegible entry; and
    • Any entries that we receive from you that are in excess of the entry limit described above.

By submitting a Sweepstakes entry you are agreeing to these Official Rules.

On or around August 20, 2013, we or our agent will randomly select one potential prize winner from among all eligible entries received.

Prize: A US$100 Amazon gift card or equivalent value in £

If the prize is not available in prize winner’s country Microsoft reserves the right to substitute the prize with a prize of equal or higher value.

If you are a potential winner, we will notify you by sending a message to the e-mail address provided within seven (7) days following the random drawing. If the notification that we send is returned as undeliverable, or you are otherwise unreachable for any reason, we may award the prize to an alternate, randomly selected winner. Only three (3) alternate drawings will be held after which the applicable prize will remain un-awarded. Any Canadian winner selected will be required to complete a timed skills question without mechanical assistance before being declared the winner.

If there is a dispute as to who is the potential winner, we will consider the potential winner to be the authorized account holder of the e-mail address used to enter the Sweepstakes. If you are a potential winner, we may require you to sign an Affidavit of Eligibility, Liability/Publicity Release and a W-9 tax form. If you are a potential winner and you are 18 or older, but are considered a minor in your place of legal residence, we may require your parent or legal guardian to sign all required forms on your behalf. If you do not complete the required forms as instructed and/or return the required forms within the time period listed on the winner notification message, we may disqualify you and select an alternate, randomly selected winner. Only three (3) alternate drawings will be held after which the applicable prize will remain un-awarded.

If you are confirmed as a winner of this Sweepstakes:

    • You may not exchange your prize for cash or any other merchandise or services. However, if for any reason an advertised prize is unavailable, we reserve the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value; and
    • You may not designate someone else as the winner. If you are unable or unwilling to accept your prize, we will award it to an alternate potential winner; and
    • If you accept a prize, you will be solely responsible for all applicable taxes related to accepting the prize; and
    • If you are otherwise eligible for this Sweepstakes, but are considered a minor in your place of residence, we may award the prize to your parent/legal guardian on your behalf; and
    • Unless otherwise noted, all prizes are subject to their manufacturer’s warranty and / or terms and conditions.

Your odds of winning this Sweepstakes depend on the number of eligible entries we receive.
