PhoneWeb – The Other Social Network
PhoneWeb – The Other Social Network

The PhoneWeb project seeks to enable – through the use of new technologies such as Low-Energy Bluetooth, GPS, Low-Power Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi direct, and etc – handheld devices to continuously and accurately discover all the people around it and to create and maintain a local neighborhood map. We also seek to implement new types of local/social applications based on the PhoneWeb infrastructure.

About PhoneWeb

Interaction between human beings either happen between people who know each other (friends, family, co-workers, etc.) or between people who may not know each other but happen to be in close physical proximity to each other (sitting in the same bus, queuing up in the same line at the counter, walking down the same street at the same time, drinking coffee in the same café, etc.).

Whereas computer technology has been phenomenally successful in tapping this first kind of social network (Facebook, Skype, etc.), there is no equivalent counterpart of the social network that is defined by a person's physical proximity.

In our PhoneWeb project, we seek to enable – through the use of new technologies such as Low-Energy Bluetooth, GPS, Low-Power Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi direct, and etc – handheld devices to continuously and accurately discover all the people around it and to create and maintain a local neighborhood map. We also seek to implement new types of local/social applications based on the PhoneWeb infrastructure.
