MSR Skype Homework Study

Microsoft Research is looking for students from middle and high school to participate in a new study exploring how students could use technology to communicate with each other outside school. In particular, they are interested in reports from classmates who agree to use Skype or similar technologies to talk with each other while working on homework. If you have any questions regarding this study, please feel free to send email to: msrhomework@microsoft.com or kori@microsoft.com.

Requirements for Participation

All participants will receive a $30 Amazon Gift Card for participating in the study.

#1 You and a friend (must be in at least one class together) can volunteer to participate by sending email to msrhomework@microsoft.com.  Please include your name, and your partner's name and email address in this email.

#2 Your parents must sign and return the Parental Consent Form. The form can either be signed digitally, scanned, or photographed and emailed to msrhomework@microsoft.com. Alternatively, it can be sent by mail to: Kori Quinn, 99/3434, 1 Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA, 98052.

#3 All students must fill out the Background Questionnaire.

#4 Install Skype or other video conferencing software (if you don't already have one). Details on how to download and use a desktop version of Skype can be found here. Please note that students under the age of 13 are currently not eligible for a Skype account, so a parent would need to create the account.

#5 Have at least three Skype conversations with your friend while working on homework. You are free to talk about whatever you want during the sessions, but we would like you to connect while you are working on your homework, or when you have questions about your homework. At the end of each session, fill out the short Session Questionnaire. If you also email us a photograph of yourself talking with your friend using Skype you will earn an additional $2.00 for each session (max $10). Please send the photo to msrhomework@microsoft.com.

#6 If you are using Skype and you add one of our research accounts as an additional person in your homework session, you can earn an additional $10. This will only work if both you and your partner are using Skype on a PC or Mac computer. Details on how to do this can be found here. Mobile phone versions and the current Windows 8 version will not allow this.

#7 After you have completed at least three Skype sessions, please fill out the Final Questionnaire. Once we have received your consent form and questionnaires we will email your gift card.

Thank you!  If you have any questions regarding this study, please feel free to send email to: msrhomework@microsoft.com or kori@microsoft.com
