Dr. Yu Zheng is a lead researcher from Microsoft Research and a Chair Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Currently, he is leading the research into urban computing in Microsoft Research, passionate about using big data to tackle urban challenges. He frequently publishes referred papers as a leading author at quality conferences and journals, such as SIGMOD, VLDB, SIGKDD and IEEE TKDE, where he received five best paper awards from ICDE 2013 and ACM SIGSPATIAL 2010, etc. He currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology (Five-Year Impact Factor: 7.52) and a member of Editorial Advisory Board of IEEE Spectrum. He is also an Editorial Board Member of GeoInformatica and IEEE Transactions on Big Data. He has served as chair on 10 prestigious international conferences—most recently, as the program co-chair of ICDE 2014. He has been invited to give over 10 keynote speeches at international conferences and forums (for example, IE’14 and APEC 2014 Smart City Forum) and guest lectures in universities like MIT, CMU, and Cornell. His book, titled “Computing with Spatial Trajectories”, has been used as a text book in USA, Canada, Australia, Korea, and China. Zheng as a team lead has also built quite a few Urban Big Data systems, such as T-Drive, Urban Air, and Urban Noise. Urban Air has been deployed in over 60 Chinese cities to infer the fine-grained air quality throughout a city and forecast air quality at future. Zheng has received 3 technical transfer awards from Microsoft and 24 granted/filed patents. In 2008, he was recognized as the Microsoft Golden Star. He is an IEEE senior member, ACM senior member, and a Distinguished Speaker and a Distinguished Member of China Computer Federation. Zheng has been featured multiple times by influential journals. In 2013, he was named one of the Top Innovators under 35 by MIT Technology Review (TR35) and featured by Time Magazine for his research on urban computing. In 2014, he was named one of the top 40 business elites under 40 in China by Fortune Magazine, because of the business impact of urban computing he has been advocating since 2008. Zheng is also an Adjunct Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a visiting Chair Professor at XiDian University, and an Affiliate Professor at Southwest Jiaotong University and Tianjin University.
