Yongguang Zhang

Yongguang Zhang joined Microsoft in January 2006, where he is now a Senior Researcher and Research Manager for the Wireless and Networking research group at Microsoft Research Asia. His current research interests include mobile systems and wireless networking.

Previously, he was a Senior Research Scientist at HRL Labs, where he led research efforts in internetworking techniques, system developments, and security mechanisms for satellite networks, ad-hoc networks, and 3G wireless systems. He was a co-PI in a DARPA Next Generation Internet project and a technical lead in five other DARPA-funded wireless network research projects. He developed several technologies that have been deployed in HRL, Boeing, and Hughes. Example major contributions include ML-IPsec protocol to enable both security and performance enhancements in wireless and satellite networks, a platform for implementing and testing mobile ad-hoc network systems, intrusion detections for ad-hoc networks, unidirectional link routing, and tools for next generation satellite network studies.

He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Purdue University in 1994. From 2001 to 2003, he was also an adjunct assistant professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Austin. He has published over 50 technical papers and one book, including top conferences and journals of his fields (like Sigcomm, Mobicom, Mobisys, ToN). He recently won Best Paper Award at NSDI’09, and 4 Best Demo Awards in a roll: at MobiSys’07, at SenSys’07, again at MobiSys’08, and at NSDI’09. He is an Associate Editor for IEEE transactions on Mobile Computing, an Area Editor for MC2R, was a guest editor in an ACM MONET Journal, and has organized and chaired/co-chaired several international conferences, workshops, and an IETF working group. He is a General Co-Chair for ACM MobiCom’09.
