Yan Lu is a Senior Researcher at Media Computing Group, Microsoft Research Asia. He joined MSR Asia in 2004, starting from the core technology research on video coding, video streaming and graphics compression. In recent years, he has been leading a team to develop the end-to-end systems around screen and video coding, multimedia communications, networking, remote computing, virtualization, user interface and hardware. He and the team have transferred a number of key technologies to Microsoft products, including Windows, Windows Server, Xbox, Office Live Meeting, and Expression Suite.

Yan Lu was a visitor and a team lead in the JDL Lab, Institute of Computing Technology, China, from 2001 to 2004. He worked on video coding technologies such as optimized visual tools for MPEG-4, rate and error control for H.264/AVC, and multi-view video coding. He also led a team to develop the key technologies for China AVS standard. He was one of the key technical contributors and editors of the first version AVS Video Standard. From 1999 to 2000, he was also with the City University of Hong Kong as a research assistant, working on near CD quality audio compression.

Yan Lu has authored/co-authored 70+ journal and conference papers. He is the inventor of 20+ granted US patents (mainly based on the work in MSR), and the inventor of 19 granted Chinese patents (mainly based on the work developed for China AVS). He received the Chinese National Technology Invention Award (second class) in 2007. He also won the IS&T/SPIE VCIP Best Paper Award in 2007.

Yan Lu received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China, in 2003.
