Yan Lu

LEAD RESEARCHER
.

Yan Lu received his Ph.D. degree in computer science from Harbin Institute of Technology, China, in 2003. He is now a Lead Researcher at Media Computing Group of Microsoft Research Asia.

He joined Microsoft Research Asia as a post-doc researcher in 2004, and worked on the key project of media eco-system. He also pursed research on distributed video coding, video streaming and graphics compression. In recent years, he leads a team working on media and mobile computing systems towards the cloud-mobile convergence, through a synthesis of remote computing, multimedia compression, networking, and NUI technologies. He and the team have transferred a number of key technologies to Microsoft products such as Xbox360, Office Live Meeting, MarketPlace and Expression.

Yan Lu was with the JDL Lab, Institute of Computing Technology, China, as a team lead from 2001 to 2004. He worked on various research projects in the field of video coding such as optimized visual tools for MPEG-4, rate and error control for H.264/AVC and multi-view video coding. He also led a team to develop the key technologies for China AVS standard. He was one of the key technical contributors and editors of the first version AVS Video Standard. From 1999 to 2000, he was also with the City University of Hong Kong as a research assistant, where he worked on near CD quality audio compression.

Yan Lu has authored and co-authored 60 papers in international conferences and journals. He is the inventor of 4 granted US patents and over 20 filed applications. He is also the inventor of 19 granted Chinese patents, mainly based on the work developed for China AVS. He received the Chinese National Technology Invention Award (second class) in 2007. He also won the IS&T/SPIE VCIP Best Paper Award in 2007.
