Social Search Social

The Social Search Social is an opportunity for attendees of WSDM 2012 and CSCW 2012 to meet each other and learn about ongoing work in the area of social and collaborative search. We hope you are able to join us for this event on Saturday, February 11th from 5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Microsoft Research. Registration is now closed; there are 110 people registered to attend.

Mailing List

At the Social Search Social, we announced the creation of a new community e-mail list. This is intended to be a low-traffic list for the purposes of announcing CFPs, workshops, symposia, etc. that may be of interest to the social search research community, or for soliciting collaborators or participants in social search research efforts. Postings are moderated to prevent spam. The list is open to any researchers interested in the topic of social search. To join, send a blank email to (note that non-blank messages are rejected by the server to avoid spam, so please delete any email signatures, etc.). To post, send a message to (note that only list members can post messages).

The Social Search Social will take place on Saturday, February 11th, from 5:30 - 8 p.m. The event will consist of opportunities for learning about current topics in social search research and meeting like-minded researchers. Activities will include a fast-paced "madness" session in which participants have the opportunity to present a single slide that advertises their current research interests, an ice-breaking activity (e.g., "researcher speed-dating") to introduce members of the WSDM and CSCW communities to each other, and free time for networking and mingling while enjoying hors d'oeuvres.

5:15 p.m.: Shuttle buses depart from the WSDM & CSCW conference hotels (for those participants who registered for shuttle bus service). If you are not taking the shuttle, you can find directions to MSR (Building 99, Room 1919) here.

5:30 - 6:15:  Arrival, Hors d'oeuvres, mingling

6:15: Opening remarks, madness participants assemble

6:30 - 7:00: Madness presentations

7:00 - 7:30: WSDM-CSCW "speed dating"

7:30 - 8:15: Dessert, coffee, mingling

8:15: Shuttle buses depart MSR for the conference hotels

The Social Search Social will take place at Microsoft Research's Redmond office, in lecture hall 1919; directions are available here. We plan to offer a shuttle from the WSDM and CSCW hotels to people who indicated a need during registration. Buses will depart from the conference hotels at 5:15 p.m. and will return at approximately 8:30 p.m.

The deadline for registration is January 6th, 2012.

Registration is required to attend the Social Search Social. Although there is no registration fee, we need to gather an accurate count of attendees. The registration form will allow you to specify whether you are interested in presenting a "madness" slide about your work and whether you will need transportation from one of the associated conference hotels.

Registration is now closed. Registered attendees should have received an email confirming their details.
