Focus

This workshop is intended to be a two-day intensive mind swap event between researchers in industry, university, government to brainstorm about semantic platforms, technologies and channels used at Internet scale to help make sense of the web of data, and help share information in a confidential manner. In particular, we will address the following questions:

  • How to author and consume semantics at Internet scale?
  • How can semantics enable data confidentiality?

Structure

The goal of this workshop is to come together to better understand the state of the art in these areas and identify a key set of open research problems, while also helping identify areas for potential collaborations among the participants. The workshop will be structured to foster information exchange and discussions among the participants by having a healthy mixture of short presentations, based on position papers, long group discussions, and plenty of time for informal social events!

Expectations

The output of the workshop will be a white paper capturing the set of open research problems. At the meeting we will consider the possible follow ups, which could be: a follow up workshop, a publication, a request for funds via a worldwide open Request for Proposals.

Exploring Solutions

At the workshop, as researchers and experts from academia, government and industry from a variety of disciplines we will explore the technical, research, societal and policy issues around the topics of authoring and finding information, and confidentiality:

  • How can people create and/or collaborate on the Internet to produce data, metadata, thesauri, ontologies or folksonomies to improve the Internet experience?
  • What are the platforms and channels which can use semantic information, at web scale, to improve findability of information on the Internet?
  • Can data and a platform be authored/created in a way which *enables* data confidentiality?
  • What are the technologies and channels which can help individuals, communities, institutions remain in control of the information by allowing levels of data confidentiality across the Internet.
