Recent developments in sensor technologies combined with sophisticated machine learning techniques have opened a new set of rich possibilities for tracking and analysing the movement and posture of the body. In particular, technologies such as the Kinect sensor and other related devices have lowered the barrier to entry to these possibilities in terms of both cost and development complexity. Such developments have sparked particular interest within a variety of healthcare domains where the new interaction possibilities and new ways of analysing the body enabled by these technologies promise to transform key aspects of healthcare practice from diagnosis through to rehabilitation and surgery, the potential benefits of these technologies arise from both the ability to track the bodies of clinicians as well as the bodies of patients.
There are many exciting opportunities to be had in this area but there are also a number of important challenges as we move forward. Accompanying the rich array of technical challenges and possibilities in machine learning and computer vision are an important set of clinical and socio-technical concerns. In order for us to make progress in this field it is critical that we bring together these set of concerns whereby technological possibilities are situated in deep understanding of clinical practices. Not only will this enable the technical and clinical sides to mutually inform new directions, it will also ensure that there is an appropriate fit of technologies to the clinical context and the reconfiguration of practices in clinically beneficial ways.
The symposium brings together the diverse perspectives of machine learning and computer vision with views from different clinical practice and insights from social science understandings of interaction and work practice involving these technologies. With presentations from eminent speakers in the field combined with multi-disciplinary interactions and discussion, attendees will understand and shape this important emerging field.
