Getting Xbox360 in Games on "SILK" Research Platform
Changhu Wang, 2006 Microsoft Research Asia fellow
-University: University of Science and Technology of China
-Internship: Microsoft Research Asia, now
"At Microsoft Research Asia you will gain research experience," Changhu Wang said. "You also have the opportunity to win big awards, such as an Xbox 360 by participating in many intern activities."
Microsoft Research Asia organizes many colorful activities and training events for interns each month. "Games on SILK" is one of them. SILK is a research prototype that can support thousands of participants in playing online Chinese chess at the same time. Changhu competed with more than 140 interns and won the championship award. Most interns had fun in this competition, and they experienced the development level of High Performance Computing PC and Artificial Intelligence. The competition encouraged interns to write their own game applications on this platform and to challenge others. "It it a pleasant experience for me attending Games on SILK," Changhu said. "When I was five years old, I beat my dad, grandpa, and uncle while playing Chinese chess. I was also a team member who helped my team win the team championship in the primary school of our city. However, from middle school until now, because of busy studies, I didn't play chess anymore. "
So in the games, Changhu found his childhood again, which brought him happiness and great surprise. Besides an Xbox 360, he also gained friendships at the lab.
Exploring Beijing with MSRA Interns
Yuichi Taguchi, 2006 MSRA fellow
-University: The University of Tokyo
-Internship: Microsoft Research Asia in 2007
After Yuichi Taguchi received his fellowship award in 2006, he joined the visual computing group of Microsoft Research Asia for four months and advanced a research project in a wonderful working environment. During his four-month life in China, Yuichi visited many great places of interest. The trip to Shidu was one of his best memories in Beijing.
In the early spring, Yuichi and almost 40 interns went out to Shidu, the beautiful place near Beijing. Climbing mountains and cliffs, building campfires, and boating in the lake were exciting to him and other interns.
"One of my best memories was an intern trip to Shidu with about 40 interns," Yuichi said, "An amusement park visit with my mentor was also exciting. I liked to play foosball and billiards at the lounge for relaxation and getting to know new friends. In addition, Microsoft Research Asia kindly arranged Chinese classes for foreign interns. That was really helpful for my life in China."
Before Yuichi ended his internship at Microsoft Research Asia, he said, "It was great to have gotten to know interns and fellows from several countries at Microsoft Research Asia. Talking with the highly motivated interns was so exciting."
