Microsoft Research Asia Joint Lab Symposium
The third Microsoft Research Asia Joint Lab Symposium will be held on November 23, 2009, in Shanghai, China, co-organized by Microsoft Research Asia and Shanghai Jiaotong University. Representatives from the China Ministry of Education, Microsoft Research, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and the 10 joint labs will attend the symposium, which will feature updates and highlights on collaborative research and talent development efforts. Tony Hey, Corporate Vice President of External Research, is invited to deliver a keynote speech on “The Fourth Paradigm: Realizing Jim Gray’s Vision for Data-Intensive Scientific Discovery”.
Microsoft Research Asia Verified Software Workshop 2009, Beijing
Registration is now open for the Microsoft Research Asia Verifiable Software Workshop to be held from October 17 to 20, 2009, in Beijing. The four-day event will assess the current state of verifiable software with lectures from prominent scientists and researchers on topics including verification theory, practices, and tools, as well as new directions and emerging opportunities in verifiable software research.
The October 3, 2009, workshop on eHeritage and Digital Art Preservation aims to unite computer vision researchers who are interested in applying their research towards cultural heritage preservation efforts. It will engage interdisciplinary research related to computer vision, specifically: computer graphics, image and audio processing, and haptic (touch) research, as well as work related to presenting eHeritage content over the Web.
Worldwide Broadcast for July’s Solar Eclipse
On July 22, 2009, regions along China’s Yangzi River witnessed the longest solar eclipse of the twenty-first century. Astronomy amateurs around the world were able to share this memorable experience through the Live Broadcast project, initiated by the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and sponsored by the University Relations team at Microsoft Research Asia and the External Research team at Microsoft Research.
More than 60 participants from academia, heritage sites, and Microsoft Research gathered in June 2009 to share ideas on using the latest computing technologies to preserve and exhibit cultural heritage. Workshop content included a presentation on recent advances in networking devices and systems to help monitor and preserve heritage sites, by Dr. Feng Zhao of Microsoft Research Asia.
Young Fellow Camp 2009 in Beijing
The Microsoft Research Asia Young Fellowship Summer Camp, held in May 2009, was jointly organized by Microsoft Research Asia and Beihang University this year. The program included presentations, interviews, team-building events, and panel discussions. During the award ceremony sessions, 30 outstanding undergraduate students from top universities around China were awarded the Microsoft Young Fellow honor. Ten faculty members and 50 students benefitted from the three-day event, which not only expanded the horizon for these students with Microsoft Research Asia cutting-edge technologies and research experiences, but also helped foster the potential talent. Dreams Ignite the Future: Dialogue with Craig Mundie
Microsoft Research Asia, Microsoft’s fundamental research arm in Asia Pacific, hosted "Dreams Ignite the Future: A Dialogue between Craig Mundie and Chinese Students" in Beijing, China, on April 22, 2009. This event, which attracted more than 1,200 students from area universities, inspired students about the future and encouraged them to pursue careers in information technology. It also recognized the achievements of Microsoft Research Asia’s Microsoft Student Technology Clubs; three student clubs received awards for innovative ideas developed during a competition.
Academic Bo Zhang Commenced Distinguished Lecturer Series
Microsoft Research Asia's foremost academic lecture series, the Distinguished Lecturer Series, invited Professor Bo Zhang, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, to visit in April 2009. During his visit to the Microsoft Research Asia lab, Professor Zhang presented a lecture titled, "There is No Royal Way to Computer Vision." He also met Microsoft Research Asia researchers in areas of mutual interest to share research updates and discuss potential collaborations.
Mobile Computing in Education Theme Workshop 2009
The Microsoft Research Asia Mobile Computing in Education Theme Workshop 2009 was successfully held in Beijing in March 2009. During this event, 67 professors gathered to discuss how to transform education by using technology. Workshop participants are experts in the areas of computer science and educational technology from 61 universities in China, Japan, Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Singapore.
2009 Asia Pacific Windows Core Workshop
To help university faculty members learn Windows Core technologies to enhance operating system curriculum development, Microsoft Research Asia University Relations organized the region-wide Windows Core workshop in Beijing, China, in March 2009. The first such workshop (2006) was held in Singapore for 20 faculty members, the second workshop (2008) was held in Hangzhou for 70 faculty members, and 112 faculty members attended March 2009 workshop.
Three More MOE-Microsoft Key Laboratories Were Unveiled on Innovation Day
Following the first five MOE-Microsoft Key Laboratories in 2004, Microsoft Research Asia announced three more laboratories on the Innovation Day of Microsoft Research Asia's 10-year anniversary on November 5, 2008, marking a new milestone for Microsoft Research Asia collaborations with academia in the Asia-Pacific Region.
Microsoft Research Asia launched its eHeritage research theme at the first eHeritage workshop in July 2008. Workshop attendees included approximately 50 academics and researchers from various disciplines who are interested in using computing technology to preserve, interpret, and share cultural heritage throughout the world.
