Academic and Research Awards in Asia-Pacific

Recognizing top talent at the intersection of computing and science

Microsoft Research Asia seeks to empower and encourage PhD students in the Asia-Pacific region to realize their potential in computer science-related research.

Our program aims to facilitate the growth of students majoring in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Information Science, or Applied Mathematics, who have the potential to become future research leaders.

PhD Fellowships

Microsoft Research Asia Fellowships open a window of opportunity for outstanding PhD students in our region, providing a head start for future research careers.

Background: PhD Fellowship Program

The program began in 1999, and since then it has attracted 476 PhD candidates from 45 universities in the Asia-Pacific region. From its inception to 2007, 227 outstanding PhD students have been awarded Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship honors or scholarships.

These fellows were from top universities and research institutes throughout the Asia-Pacific region, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tokyo University, and Korea University, among others.

The Fellowship Program provides each fellow winner a unique opportunity to experience hands-on research at Microsoft Research Asia. During the 3 or 6 month-long internships at the Beijing lab, students work with outstanding researchers on an advanced research project, gaining valuable research experience, and becoming familiar with the corporate research environment while expanding their network connections.

From 1999 to 2007, there have been 124 fellows who have participated in internships at Microsoft Research Asia, and 25 fellows have joined Microsoft Research as researchers after graduation.
