Microsoft Research Summer Schools in Computer Science
Every year, Microsoft Research organizes summer schools in partnership with our academic partners around the world. These summer schools focus on a range of research areas to attract prominent graduate students and young scientists. The schools provide a stimulating environment for students to meet and establish professional relationships with each other, local faculty members, and industry researchers—as well as school lecturers, who are among the top scientists in their fields.

PhD Summer School 2015
June 29 to July 3, 2015 | Cambridge, United Kingdom
The PhD Summer School is an annual event that is organized at Microsoft Research Cambridge in relation to the Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme. The tenth Microsoft Research Summer School will take place at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, UK, from 29 June to 3 July 2015. It will include a series of talks of academic interest, transferable skills talks, and poster sessions that will provide invited students the opportunity to present their work to Microsoft researchers.
Microsoft Research Data Science Summer School
June 15 to August 7 | New York, New York, United States
The Data Science Summer School (DS3) is an intensive, eight-week hands-on introduction to data science for college students in the New York City area. DS3 includes both course work in data science and group research projects. The summer school is taught by leading scientists at Microsoft Research, and is held at the new Microsoft Research office in the heart of New York City. As we are committed to increasing diversity in computer science, we strongly encourage women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities to apply. The application deadline is April 17, 2015.
PhD Summer School 2014
June 30 to July 4, 2014 | Cambridge, United Kingdom
This annual event is organized at Microsoft Research Cambridge in relation to the Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme. The ninth Microsoft Research Summer School included a series of talks of academic interest, transferable skills talks, and poster sessions that provided invited students the opportunity to present their work to Microsoft researchers. Invited students included PhD students in their first or second year from universities and research institutions with which Microsoft Research partners, as well as all Microsoft Research PhD Scholars. Lectures and posters sessions were open to all research staff and students from the University of Cambridge.
India Summer School 2014
June 23 to July 2, 2014 | Bangalore, India
Held in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science, this event focused on the latest advances in wireless networking such as full-duplex communication, rate-less codes, and white space networks, covering both theoretical and practical aspects of these exciting research areas. Participants gained hands-on experience through targeted labs where they experimented with implementation by using Software Defined Radio platforms such as WARP.
Machine Learning Summer School 2014
January 12–16, 2014 | El Gouna, Egypt
The Machine Learning Summer School series started in 2002 with the motivation to promulgate modern methods of statistical machine learning and inference. It was motivated by the observation that many students are keen to learn more specialized topics in machine learning, and an increasing number of researchers want to apply advanced machine learning methods to their research problems. The school will be held in El Gouna, Egypt. This edition will be organized by Microsoft Research Advanced Technology Lab in Cairo.
School on Algorithms for Massive Data 2013
July 31, 2013–August 7, 2013 | Moscow, Russia
Organized by Microsoft Research, in cooperation with Yandex and Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Microsoft School on Algorithms for Massive Data (ALMADA) will provide a unique opportunity for students to learn about fundamental and state-of-the-art results on algorithms and systems for processing massive datasets. The school offers four courses on technical topics, and additional lectures will provide context for real-life applications and business opportunities. Students will experience an intellectually stimulating environment for learning and networking with each other and school lecturers.

2012 Summer School on Concurrency
August 22–29, 2012 | St. Petersburg, Russia
The 2012 Microsoft Research Russian Summer School on Concurrency and Parallelism in Software was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and organized in cooperation with ITMO National Research University. An annual Microsoft Research event, the Russian Summer School is intended for PhD and master’s students as well as young scientists. This year, we invited eight of the world’s top experts in concurrency and parallelism to lecture at the school. In addition to lectures, the program included practical sessions and homework.
Verified Software Workshop and Summer School
August 23–31, 2012 | Shanghai, China
Microsoft Research Asia, in partnership with East China Normal University, hosted the second Verified Software Workshop and Summer School in Shanghai, China. Participants explored new directions and emerging opportunities in verifiable software research with colleagues from the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. This workshop included two days of lectures from prominent scientists and researchers on topics in verification theory, practices, and tools, followed by a five-day summer school.
PhD Summer School 2012
July 2–6, 2012 | Cambridge, United Kingdom
A series of talks of academic interest, transferable skills talks, and poster sessions that gave invited students the opportunity to present their work to Microsoft researchers. For the first time, Cambridge researchers presented demos of their work during a special DemoFest session. India 2012 Summer School on Distributed Algorithms, Systems, and Programming
The Microsoft Research India Summer School series, held in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science, consists of lectures in a chosen area by leading experts from around the world. The 2012 school addressed both theoretical as well as practical aspects of building distributed systems and was targeted at senior undergraduates, graduate students, research scholars and faculty members.
The Human Computer Interaction Summer School
December 5–9, 2011 | Canberra, ACT, Australia
The Australian National University (ANU)/University of South Australia (UniSA) Human Computer Interaction Summer School comprised a crash course in Research Methods in Human Computer Interaction at senior undergraduate/graduate level together with laboratory exercises and guest lectures on special topics. The conversion of a 40 PC Linux lab to Windows 7 provided the platform for this inaugural student event held at ANU. Kinect-related projects were the prime focus for the students during the first day of this Microsoft Research-sponsored school.
PhD School in Data Management and Information Retrieval
September 26–October 1, 2011 | Kioloa, NSW, Australia
Co-sponsored by Microsoft Research and the ARC Research Network in Enterprise Information Infrastructure, the seventh PhD School emphasized research training and cultivating young researchers. It brought PhD students together with researchers from top institutions to enhance and invigorate research education, and to improve the understanding of emerging and fundamental topics in ICT. In addition, PhD students and other researchers had the opportunity to discuss their work with peers and mentors and to start developing collaborative ideas.
2011 Summer School in Software Engineering and Verification
July 17–27, 2011 | Moscow, Russia
Consisting of a number of courses from international leaders in their field, this school exposed promising graduate students and young scientists to classical results as well as leading-edge research in software engineering, verification, and program analysis. Students were required to complete a project as part of the school.
2011 PhD Summer School
A series of talks of academic interest and poster sessions give invited students the opportunity to present their work to Microsoft researchers and Cambridge academics. 2011 Summer School on Security and Privacy
Students participated in a forum for learning and discussing all aspects of computer and communication security, including foundational topics as well as cutting-edge research on network security, database security, and program security.
2011 Summer School on Computing for Socio-Economic Development
June 13–27, 2011 | Bangalore, India
Graduate students, faculty members, and outstanding undergraduate students from engineering and the social sciences were exposed to cutting-edge research in Information and Communication Technologies and Development. The school generated enthusiasm and equipped attendees with the tools needed to conduct research in this exciting field.
Computer Vision School 2011
July 28–August 3, 2011 | Moscow, Russia
Advanced undergraduates, PhD students, and young scientists and developers received a unique opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of and latest research on computer vision and image analysis from top scientists in the area.
