Each year, the Consumer Electronics Association hosts the International CES, a consumer-electronics trade show in Las Vegas. The 2011 showcase hosted representatives from more than 140 countries, and many past keynote speeches have been delivered by Microsoft's Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. Past contributions from Microsoft include the Xbox gaming system and Avatar Kinect. For 2012, Microsoft Research presents two research technologies as part of the What’s Next booth at the event.
The Printing Dress
Asta Roseway from Microsoft Research and Sheridan Martin Small of the Xbox team decided it was time to wear your words. The idea of wearable technology has been around since at least the first wristwatch, and The Printing Dress is an enormous leap forward from other fashion statements. The ability to wear your social media away from the monitor—literally—, could have people putting more thought into their words as they come bounding into the physical world.
By meticulous design, tweets are as important to the dress as the stitching itself. Having already won Best In Show and Best Concept during ISWC 2011, the 15th annual International Symposium on Wearable Computers, placing thoughts into print now can be reflected on your garment.
Years in development, the Kinect project—and developments engendered by it already has had a lasting impact on a myriad of industries. Using a depth camera, KinectFusion creates real-time, high-quality 3-D models of a room. By moving the angle of the camera or moving with it, the camera's view itself changes in real time, and new data and objects, real or virtual, can be placed into the environment.
KinectFusion advances interaction and augmented reality by having the surroundings built immediately, versus having frames built in other programs. The models produced by KinectFusion not only have shape and can represent real areas, but weight and physics can be assigned with a realistic engine.
