Microsoft Research Innovation Excellence Awards for Embedded Systems

Microsoft Research sponsored an Request for Proposals (RFP) for Embedded Systems. This RFP is now closed and all awards have been made.

Microsoft Research awarded Innovation Excellence Awards totalling $1.7M in funding for projects involving research or teaching with Microsoft embedded systems. Out of 139 papers, awards were made to 77 projects.  This was significantly more than anticipated, but because of the remarkably high quality of the proposals, extra funding was found to support more projects.

Technology Resources

In combination with the RFP, Microsoft is making available a number of important technologies:

  • Microsoft Windows Embedded XP. This includes Microsoft Windows Embedded Studio, which is a set of development tools that are used to create a custom Windows XP Embedded image, based on the requirements of embedded system hardware and software.
  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET Version 4.2. This includes Platform Builder and other tools used to work with CE .NET on both real hardware and using an emulator, as well as access to low-level operating system files available in the included Shared Source for Windows CE .NET 4.2.
  • Mobile IPV6 Technology Preview. IPV6 is built in to Windows CE .NET and Embedded XP, as well as Windows XP Pro. The Microsoft Research Mobile IPV6 technology preview is based upon Draft 20 of the IETF standardization process, and includes the complete source code base under a shared source license. Microsoft Research has developed this preview in partnership with Lancaster University. More information on the Microsoft Research work on IPV6 can be found here. The Technology Preview will be available in June 2003.
  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET for Automotive SDK. This SDK is targeted at developers interested in using CE .NET in the Automotive domain. More information can be found here.
  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET Curriculum Kit and License. This kit contains materials, and a license permitting academics to use MSDN Shared Source CE .NET source code in teaching, curriculum development and books. The curriculum kit is part of the Windows Embedded Academic Program, or WEMAP.
