Before you download the software and expect it to run PLEASE
NOTE:
-
These are not Microsoft products. Most
are freeware, and are alpha or beta releases.
-
Talk to your network manager/provider - they
must already be set up to receive mbone packets, or must set it up for you.
-
The most popular tools are sdr (for finding
out about mbone sessions and starting new ones), vic (for video), wbd
(whiteboard), and vat or rat (for audio).
-
For some of the ports of vic to run your
display must be set as 256 colours (8 bit) or else 24 bit. Anything else will
not work.
THE TOOLS
Vat, rat, wbd and vic can be run from the DOS
prompt with the parameters [IP address]/[Port number]. Alternately, sdr can
list the active mbone sessions and automatically launch the appropriate
programs for you. sd is the old version of this tool, and sdr is the new one.
The Open MASH
project at UC Berkeley has the MBONE tools (no longer as separate apps).
SHRIMP
is a full suite of the MBone tools, including a transcoding gateway.
Mice
has a full suite of MBONE tools also, including RAT.
Georgia
Tech port of vic ; Version
of vic and vat from Softlab-NSK
"Wbd
is a shared multicast whiteboard, hopefully compatible with the wb whiteboard
from LBL"

Other software:
Multikit
- a distributed, multicast-based directory browser. It extends some of the
ideas in sdr. An optional UDP tunneling mechanism allows non-MBONE connected
users - even those with a dialup connection - to access MBONE services.
liveCaster
is a simple application that can be used to periodically multicast small pieces
of textual data - such as prices and quotes - to a specified multicast address
and port.
