VCIP 2005 REPORT

Conference Site

Visual Communications and Image Processing 2005 claimed great success at Beijing Friendship Hotel on July 12-15, 2005

VCIP 2005 (Visual Communications & Image Processing 2005) International Symposium was held with great success in Beijing Friendship Hotel from the 12th to the 15th of July, 2005.  More than 260 researchers, professors and students from 26 countries and regions in Africa, America, Asia, Australia and Europe, have attended the conference. Scholars and researchers spent three full days to freely share their innovative ideas on research, discuss on the latest developments in this field and debate what could be the next big things. The conference site was especially characterized by elegance, simplicity and grandeur. First class hotel service and professional meeting organization have paved the way for the smooth operation and effectiveness of the conference.

Key Data Highlights:

  • 540 paper submissions – the largest in VCIP history;
  • 241 accepted papers – the most in VCIP history;
  • 42% accept ratio – the lowest in VCIP history;
  • 50 technical sessions – the most in VCIP history;
  • Three keynote speeches featuring industrial and academic leaders;
  • One tutorial on state of the art of distributed video coding;
  • Two panel discussions debating controversial yet provoking new technologies and applications in scalable video coding and multi-view imaging;
  • Four special sessions covering the current hot topics of video coding standards, media protection and DRM, digital entertainment, and scalable video coding;
  • Two demo sessions showcasing state of the art research results from academy and industry;
  • Twenty high quality lecture sessions and eighteen in-depth poster sessions, most with six parallel sessions running concurrently;
  • Two best student paper awards and one young investigator award have been selected; and
  • An exciting bouquet evening with a best paper awards ceremony.

THE TUTORIAL & RECEPTION

Tutorial- Prof. Zixiang Xiong gave a comprehensive coverage on the theory and algorithmic design of distributed video coding.

Bio of Zixiang Xiong:

Dr. Xiong received an NSF Career Award in 1999, an ARO Young Investigator Award in 2000 and an ONR Young Investigator Award in 2001. He also received faculty fellow awards in 2001, 2002 and 2003 from Texas A&M University. He is currently an associate editor for the IEEE Trans. on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, the IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing, and the IEEE Trans. on Image Processing. He is the presenter of tutorial on “Distributed Source Coding: Theory, Algorithms and Applications” at ICASSP'05.

Reception

Careful preparation and thoughtful arrangements made the conference check-in highly efficient and effective.  The reception held at Beijing Sigma Center rendered all the guests a big and warm welcome from one of the major conference host -- MSRA (Microsoft Research Asia). During the reception, Dr. Heung-Yeung Shum, managing director of Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) and Dr. Shipeng LI, research manager of Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) gave a welcome speech and introduction to Microsoft Research Asia featuring some very cool research demos.

THE MAIN CONFERENCE AND KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

During the three-day main conference, over 260 representatives actively took part in over 50 technical sessions and key note speeches given by the experts in their fields. High quality dining and adequately prepared food & beverage kept everyone in high spirits for the duration of the conference.

Keynote 1 – Prof. Wen Gao, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China):  Video Coding Tools – Performance and Cost Efficiency

Keynote 2 -  Prof. Ming-Ting Sun, University of Washington (USA), Dr. Ya-Qin Zhang, Microsoft Corporation (USA):  Mobile Computing

Keynote 3 -  Dr. Gary J. Sullivan, Microsoft Corporation (USA):  The H.264/MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (AVC) Standard and its Enhancement Projects

THE POSTER AND DEMO SESSION

During VCIP2005, more than 130 posters and demos had been shown. It gives the participants adequate time to fully exchange their ideas.

THE BREAK OUT SESSION

The 3 parallel break out lecture sessions were always packed with audience in meeting rooms during 13th  to 15th of July

GRANT BANQUET

The status report of VCIP 2005 was presented by VCIP 2005 program chair Dr. Shipeng Li from MSRA. Three paper awards were conferred to the recipients.

The grand award banquet featured a traditional Chinese feast and specially arranged performances such as Peking Opera, which served as samples of traditional Chinese culture.  It deeply attracted foreign guests and made them appreciate the exclusive charm of Chinese culture.
Free services such as broad-band Internet access, tourism consultation, etc., were available throughout the conference, which provided a lot convenience for the participants.
