The 5th Microsoft Research Asia Faculty Summit (http://research.microsoft.com/asia/asiaur/summit04/index.aspx) which will be held on Nov. 8-9, 2004 at Friendship Hotel in Beijing, China. Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) hosts this annual summit to foster communication among academic researchers and professors in emerging research areas. This event serves to facilitate collaboration between MSRA and academics across Asia Pacific in research and education.
We select topics of computing research and education which draw the most interest and generate the most impact in the region. On the first day, the speakers include Harry Shum, Managing Director of MSRA; Dan Ling, Vice President of Microsoft Corporation; Yaoxue Zhang, Director of Higher Education Department, Ministry of Education in China; Jitendra Malik, Chair of Department of Electric Engineering and Computer Science, University of California at Berkeley; and Kiyoharu Aizawa, Professor of Department of Frontier Informatics of University of Tokyo. In addition, there will be multiple sessions covering various research and technology topics presented by speakers from Redmond and Beijing. A panel discussion will be arranged to discuss topics related to Computer Science at universities in Asian countries, such as how to attract high-quality students, how to retain talent in the local IT industry, and how to help young faculty develop their career in teaching and research. The research prototypes developed by MSRA and the results of joint research by MSRA and universities will be demonstrated during an extended lunch period. To close day one, there will be a banquet party in the evening for MSRA researchers and summit attendees to relax and exchange ideas.
For day two, we will combine the summit with the annual academic conference - 21st Century Computing – hosted by MSRA. 21st Century Computing is recognized as the most influential computing-related academic conference in China. During the conference, you will hear the keynotes given by the world-class scientists and researchers, such as YANG Chen-Ning, Nobel laureate; and Chuck Thacker, Draper Prize winner.
About 200 deans and professors will be invited to attend this year’s event.
