Academic Symposium Introduction
The 8th annual "Computing in the 21st Century" conference is to be held on October 24 in Beijing.

The conference, organized by Microsoft Research Asia, Tsinghua University, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, has as its theme: "The Challenge of Quality Software." This theme reflects a world in which computing is becoming more than merely an important component of day-to-day human activity – it is now nearly indispensable. Ways must be found to make computerized systems and services more reliable, predictable, and secure even as the complexity of systems grows.

A distinguished lineup of conference speakers includes world-renowned scholars and computing experts, including three Turing Award recipients as well as members of the USA National Academy of Engineering. These academic and industrial leaders will share their ideas and vision in keynote speeches.

The first international "Computing in the 21st Century" conference was held in 1999, shortly after Microsoft Research Asia was founded. The conference goal is to create academic exchange and facilitate communication between Chinese and international scholars. The event is a unique opportunity for Chinese computer scientists to learn from and collaborate with peers from across the globe on the latest computer science advances and trends.
