TerminAnt: AR game on WP7

TerminAnt is a conceptual AR game on WindowsPhone7. This game harnesses live video feed as the backdrop for a game pitting cars from the real world against virtual ants (or your plague of choice), showing how “NEXT GENERATION AUGMENTED REALITY mobile gaming” looks like, using simplicity as a pillar to engage with the users.

Designed for urban environments, the user must simply point his/her mobile device at a source of traffic, framing the street with the most vehicles moving. Then begin to play, Ants will start to walk on the video see-through display in real-time street traffic. Vehicle motions are estimated in real-time using efficient image processing algorithms. When ants from a virtual colony subsequently crawl onto the screen, they are squashed whenever they collide with oncoming real traffic. Users can expedite the ant extermination either by adjusting the orientation of their mobile device so as to align the crawling ants with traffic lanes, or by using the touchscreen to flick the ants towards particular vehicles.

We create this concept game, with the desire to demonstrate the power of design, and we envision that this type of innovative human-computer interaction from simple design concepts will produce an exciting gaming environment, involving users on a more personal level by creating a suspension of disbelief of the divide between real and virtual worlds. And makes people engage more with the environment around, paying attention to details of the real world we live in.
