Daniel’s Adventures in Computer Vision Land

This talk presents a lively romp through a wide array of research topics I have worked on in the last few years. I’ll speak about:

  • Image editing, including image resizing and recolouring;
  • Algebraic topology and its (mis)uses in computer vision, particularly for segmentation;
  • Fancy-pants features which mimic deep learning architectures; and 3D sensing.

The talk will be at a high level, in an effort to keep listeners captivated, or at least awake. Theorem proofs and autographs will be available upon request after the talk.

Speaker Details

Professor Daniel Freedman is currently a Senior Researcher at Microsoft Research – Advanced Technology Labs Israel, where he works on algorithms in computer vision and machine learning. Daniel received his AB in Physics from Princeton University (Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi) in 1993, and his PhD in Engineering Sciences from Harvard University in 2000. From 2000-9, he was Assistant Professor, and then Associate Professor (with tenure), in the Computer Science Department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) (Troy, NY).
Having had enough of the snow and the clouds, Daniel decided to spend a year in sunny Israel, as a Fulbright Fellow and Visiting Professor of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science at the Weizmann Institute of Science. The climate and Mediterranean lifestyle proved so much fun that Daniel relocated to Israel permanently with his family, and then took up a series of positions: as Senior Research Scientist at Hewlett-Packard (HP) Labs in Haifa; as Associate Professor in the School of Engineering, Bar Ilan University; and as Lead Research Scientist at IBM Research in Haifa. Finally in 2012, Daniel landed happily at Microsoft Research, where he’s been enjoying himself immensely.
In 2002, Daniel received the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, and in 2007, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship. In addition, Daniel was an investigator on grants from NSF, NIH, and the US Army, grants whose award values totalled in excess of $5 million. With his wife Catriella, he has produced four ongoing projects, ages 13, 10, 8, and 5.
